The DPI myth, briefly
“Save it at 300 DPI” is the most repeated and least useful instruction in print. A file’s DPI field is metadata: a note saying how big the author meant the image to be. Change it from 72 to 300 and not one pixel moves — you have only rewritten the intended size. An image is exactly as printable a second later as it was before.
What actually governs quality is pixel count divided by physical size, which is what the numbers above measure. If you need pixels for a given sheet rather than the reverse, the DPI calculator works in that direction, and what DPI for printing covers when 150 is genuinely enough.
Frequently asked questions
Does changing a file’s DPI make it print better?
No, and this is the most useful thing to understand about print resolution. The DPI stored in a file is a note about intended size, not a property of the image: setting a 1000 × 1000 pixel image from 72 to 300 DPI changes no pixels and adds no detail — it only tells software to place those same 1000 pixels across a smaller area. What decides quality is pixel count against the physical size you actually print, which is what this tool measures.
Why is 300 DPI the standard?
It comes from eyesight, not from printers. The eye resolves roughly one arcminute of detail, so at a typical held-in-hand distance of about 30 cm the useful resolution works out at around 287 PPI — rounded to 300. The corollary is that the standard is distance-dependent: a poster viewed from two metres is fully resolved at about 45 PPI, which is why billboards print at resolutions that would look terrible in a book.
Is more resolution than 300 PPI worth anything?
Rarely for photographs. Beyond roughly 300 PPI at hand-held distance you are printing detail the eye cannot separate, and the printer’s own dot structure becomes the limit instead. Two exceptions: fine line art and small text, which benefit up to about 600 PPI because edges are sharper than the eye’s sampling limit suggests, and images that may be cropped later.
What about upscaling with AI?
Modern upscalers genuinely help — but they invent plausible detail rather than recover real detail, so accuracy is not guaranteed even when sharpness improves. For photographs of people and landscapes the result is often convincing. For anything where the detail carries meaning — documents, technical drawings, product photographs used for inspection, maps — treat an upscale as a cosmetic improvement and not as a higher-resolution original.
Nothing is uploaded here — how does it read the file?
The browser decodes the image locally to read its pixel dimensions, and the first 128 KB of the file is parsed in your tab for the JFIF, EXIF or PNG pHYs header that declares resolution. Nothing is sent anywhere, no copy is retained, and the analysis disappears when you close the page.
My camera says 12 megapixels. How large can I print?
A 12 MP photograph is around 4032 × 3024 pixels, which is 13.4 × 10.1 inches at 300 PPI — comfortably A4, and A3 at a still-excellent 240 PPI. At 150 PPI it stretches to about 27 × 20 inches, which is a perfectly good poster when viewed from a step back. Megapixels alone are not the answer though: aspect ratio decides how much you crop to reach a given paper size.
