Flashcard maker

Printable double-sided flashcards: type a question and its answer on each line, or paste two columns from a spreadsheet, and print fronts and backs that line up when the sheet is turned over — 4 to 10 cards on A4 or US Letter, or straight onto 3 × 5 index cards. No printer that prints both sides? Fold them instead. Free, no sign-up; your cards never leave your browser.

Why the backs are in a different order

When a sheet turns over on its long edge, the card that was top left on the front is top right on the back. So the backs are laid out in mirror order, each row right to left, and every answer ends up behind its own question. On a short-edge flip the rows swap top to bottom instead. Choose the flip edge here and the same one in the print dialog — the double-sided printing guide shows where the setting is in Word, Chrome, Acrobat and macOS.

Check the first sheet

Printers do not all feed paper perfectly straight, and a few millimetres either way moves the backs. Print the first sheet, hold it up to a window and see whether each answer sits behind its question; then print the rest. Card stock of 160–200 gsm stops the answers showing through. For cards bigger than the sheet allows, choose fewer per sheet; to work out other layouts, the sheet layout calculator counts how many of any size fit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make double-sided flashcards that line up?

Type each card on a line, front and back separated by a | or a tab, choose how many cards per sheet, and print the PDF on both sides with the flip edge the page tells you: Flip on long edge unless you choose short edge here. The backs are placed in mirror order — on a long-edge flip each row runs right to left — so every answer lands behind its own question. Print one sheet first and hold it up to the light to check before you print the rest.

My printer cannot print on both sides. Can I still make flashcards?

Yes. Choose Fold instead of both sides: each card is printed with its front and its back side by side on one sheet, with a dotted line between them. Cut along the dashed lines, fold each card on the dotted line and glue or tape the halves together. The cards are half as many per sheet, and thicker, which suits cards you will handle a lot.

Can I print on 3 × 5 index cards?

Yes. Choose Index card 3 × 5 in (or 4 × 6 in, A6 or A7): the PDF has one page per side, card size, front then back. Load the cards in the manual or rear feed, set the paper size in the print dialog to the card size, print at 100% and turn the stack over for the backs if your printer does not print both sides of card stock.

Can I paste cards from a spreadsheet or Quizlet?

Yes. Copy two columns from Excel or Google Sheets — fronts in the first, backs in the second — and paste: each row becomes a card. An export from Quizlet with tabs between term and definition pastes the same way. Lines with “ | ” or “ = ” between the two sides work too.

What happens to long answers?

The text shrinks to fit the card, down to 7 points, and wraps at spaces. If it still does not fit, it is cut short and the page says how many sides were shortened: choose fewer cards per sheet for more room. Up to 300 cards and 400 characters a side.

Is what I type saved or uploaded?

No. The cards are drawn in your browser and go only into the PDF you download. Nothing is sent, nothing is stored, and the link from “Continue on another device” carries only the layout, not the cards.
