Booklet maker
Turn any PDF into a booklet you can print, fold and staple: the pages are put in folding order, two to each side of a landscape sheet — A4 sheets make an A5 booklet, Letter sheets a half-letter one. Your PDF is read in your browser and never uploaded; text and drawings stay sharp because the pages are copied, not turned into pictures.

What the booklet maker does
Printers call it imposition: putting pages on sheets so that they read in order once the sheets are printed, stacked and folded. In a 16-page booklet the outer sheet carries pages 16 and 1 on the front and 2 and 15 on the back; the innermost carries 8 and 9 in the middle. The booklet maker works this out for any page count, pads it to a multiple of four with blank pages where you want them, and draws each of your pages into its half of a landscape sheet — scaled to fit, or at actual size — keeping its proportions and centring it.
Each page is copied into the new PDF as it is, not photographed: text stays text and lines stay lines, and the file is about the size of the original. Pages turned by the PDF itself print the way they look on screen, pages of different sizes are each fitted to their half, and a landscape page can be turned to fill a portrait half.
How to print the booklet
- Acrobat or Acrobat Reader: File > Print, Page Sizing & Handling Actual size (not Booklet — the pages are already in booklet order), tick Print on both sides of paper and choose Flip on short edge.
- Chrome or Edge: open the PDF, Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac), More settings, Scale Default or Custom 100, tick Print on both sides and choose Flip on short edge.
- macOS Preview: File > Print, Scale 100%, turn on Two-Sided and set the binding to Short-Edge (under Layout; where it sits depends on the version of macOS).
Print the first two sheets and fold them before printing the rest: page 2 should face page 1’s back. Then fold the whole stack in half together, crease it with a ruler, and staple through the fold from the outside — a long-arm stapler reaches the middle of an A4 or Letter sheet. Where the setting is in other programs, and how to turn a stack by hand, is in the double-sided printing guide.
Why the PDF looks out of order
On screen the booklet PDF shows page 16 beside page 1, then 2 beside 15: that is right. Its pages are sheet sides, in printing order — front of sheet 1, back of sheet 1, front of sheet 2 — and they only read in sequence once folded. With the long-edge option every second PDF page is upside down on screen, on purpose. Tick “Small page numbers” to print each booklet page’s number at its foot while you test the order.
Something bigger than a sheet goes the other way — one page over many sheets — with the poster splitter.
Frequently asked questions
How many pages does a booklet need?
A multiple of 4. Each sheet is folded once and carries four pages — two on the front, two on the back — so 4, 8, 12, 16 and so on. A 13-page PDF becomes 16 pages: the booklet maker adds the 3 blank pages at the end, before the back cover, or after the front cover, as you choose.
How do I make an A5 booklet from A4 paper?
Choose A4 as the sheet. Each A4 page is scaled to fit half an A4 sheet, which is A5 (148 × 210 mm): A5 is A4 reduced by 1 ÷ √2, so the pages are printed at about 71% with nothing cut off and no space wasted. Print on both sides, flip on short edge, fold the stack in half and staple at the fold.
How do I make a half-letter booklet from US Letter paper?
Choose US Letter as the sheet. Half a Letter sheet is 5½ × 8½ in; a Letter page fits it at about 65%, with roughly 0.7 in to spare at the top and bottom, because the two shapes differ. For pages that fill the half exactly, set up the document at 5½ × 8½ in to begin with. On 11 × 17 in Tabloid paper, Letter pages print at full size.
Why flip on the short edge?
The booklet’s sheet is landscape, and you turn it over sideways, like the page of a book — about its short edge. With Flip on long edge the back comes out upside down. If your printer only offers the long edge, choose “Both sides, long edge only”: every back is then printed upside down in the PDF so that it comes out the right way up.
Can I print a booklet without a printer that prints both sides?
Yes. Choose “One side: I turn the stack” and download two PDFs. Print the fronts, put the printed stack back in the tray without changing its order, and print the backs. Try it with a short document first: if the backs come out upside down, tick the upside-down option; if page 2 lands behind the last sheet, tick reverse order.
What is creep, and do I need it?
When a thick stack is folded, the inner sheets stick out further at the open edge than the outer ones, so trimming that edge straight takes more off the inner pages, and their outer margins shrink. Creep moves the pages of each inner sheet a little towards the fold to make up for it: about the paper’s thickness per sheet, roughly 0.1 mm for 80 gsm office paper. A booklet of a few sheets that is not trimmed does not need it.
What are signatures?
Sections of a book, each a small booklet of a few sheets folded together. A thick book does not fold well as one stack, so it is printed as signatures of, say, 4 to 8 sheets, each folded separately; the signatures are then stacked in order and sewn or glued at the spine. Turn on Signatures, choose the sheets per signature, and every signature is put in its own folding order.
Why not use the booklet option in Acrobat or Word?
Use it if you have it: Acrobat and Acrobat Reader on a computer print a PDF as a booklet (Booklet under Page Sizing & Handling), and Word has Book fold for its own documents. But the PDF viewers in browsers, macOS Preview and phones have no booklet option of their own, and Word’s works on Word documents, not PDFs. This tool gives you a PDF that is already in booklet order, so it prints from any of them at Actual size.
Is my PDF uploaded? What about password-protected PDFs?
Nothing is uploaded: the PDF is read and rewritten in your browser, and the link from “Continue on another device” carries only the settings. A PDF protected by a password or by restrictions on changes cannot be rearranged; save or print a copy without the protection, if you have the right to, and use that.
