How the mazes are made

Each maze starts as a grid of closed squares (or a set of rings cut into cells). From the entrance a path wanders to a random neighbouring cell it has not visited, knocking down the wall between them, and backs up whenever it is boxed in, until it has visited every cell. That leaves one long, branching passage with no loops — so there is exactly one way from Start to Finish, which the answer page draws. For more puzzles to print, try the sudoku generator or the word search maker.

Keeps these settings in the link. Useful for moving from a phone to the computer with the printer on it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a printable maze?

Choose square or round, a difficulty and how many mazes go on a page, then download the PDF — the mazes first, then answer pages with the path drawn in red. Up to 4 mazes a page and 10 pages. Press → or Random set for a different set, or type any set number.

Does every maze have a solution?

Every maze has exactly one path from Start to Finish, and every square of it can be reached: it is carved as a single winding passage that branches, never as separate pieces, and never with a loop. The answer page shows that path.

Which difficulty for which age?

Easy (8 squares across, 5 rings round) suits children of about 4 to 6; Medium (15 across) about 6 to 9; Hard (25 across) older children and adults; Expert (40 across) is a long sit-down puzzle. With four mazes a page each one is a little smaller and simpler.

What is a round maze?

A maze in rings around a centre: the way in is a gap in the outside ring and the goal is the dot in the middle. Rings further out are cut into more cells so the passages stay about the same width all the way round.

Can I print the same mazes again?

Yes. Each set has a number, printed at the foot of the page; the same shape, difficulty, layout and set number always draw the same mazes, so the answers can be printed later or shared with a link. A first visit starts on a random set.
